Decatur, AL September 16-17 33rd Place Overall / 60 Teams (622) As of Riverfest 2005, the Co-Bros can no longer say that they are rookies on the BBQ circuit. Over the past year, we have gained knowledge and skills of how to succeed in this competitive sport, but as all can see we have much room for improvement. In Decatur, the “EGG Carton” had an extended stay on the gorgeous banks of the Tennessee River and was parked from Thursday night until Sunday morning for the big hometown BBQ party that included all of our supportive grandparents and in-laws. The Co-Bros spent Friday afternoon prepping the different cuts of meat on our workstation and in the newly constructed “GREEN” Room. Later in the evening, family and friends visited with the Co-Bros for an adult beverage and a little warm-up BBQ (ribs, rib-tips, TNR Beans) to get the party cranking. We got a chance to talk BBQ and All-Star BBQ challenge with, friend and master BBQ chef, Chris Lilly of Big Bob Gibson’s.
(continued) We also got some great tips on meat presentation from David Roper, a Master KCBS Judge, Jack Daniels tour guide, and member of the judging cast from the All-Star BBQ Showdown. As midnight grew closer and the EGG smoke was saturating the air with the great aroma of pork butt and brisket, our BBQ neighbors and friends Double Deuces BBQ Company decided to flavor the night with a little cinema excitement on the tube. The Egg Carton provided the Bros and BBQ bud Whoop-de-Que with stadium theater seats…definitely some unique scenery at a BBQ competition. The steady and reliable BGEs hovered between 225-250 degrees throughout the night while Kirk monitored them as the appointed Pitmaster for the graveyard shift. As the smoked meats came off the cookers and were ready for presentation, the “GREEN” Room allowed for the much needed privacy that escaped us at the last show. The “GREEN” Room was set-up adjacent to the party/TV room that had non-stop college football entertainment throughout the day/night thanks to our new portable satellite dish mount from www.rvdishmount.com. As turn-ins were completed by Brent and Kirk with a full sprint to the finish line, the Co-Bros felt good about their performance. Well, as the teams were called at awards, the Co-Bros never heard their name and this was the first time this season that we did not receive a call. However, in consolation we did place 11th in brisket (166) out of the 60 teams that competed and we also scored in the 620’s overall for the 3rd show this rookie season. Also, the Co-Bros performed better than all the Decatur teams on the Riverfront Row except for the famous Jiggy Piggy BBQ team lead by our buddy Bob Fite. We also continued to spread the gospel about the Big Green Egg, Dizzy Pig Rubs, and Tennessee River BBQ Sauce to all of the BBQ enthusiasts that visited the Co-Bro-Que camp throughout the weekend. As the BBQ show ended and the party broke, the Co-Bros began looking forward to an off-season of practicing their specialty meats, catering some gatherings, and selling some more rubs/sauces/BGEs. War Co-Bros-Que and we look forward to the hitting the completion trail in the spring of 2006… so stay tuned !!! | | Chicken | Ribs | Pork | Brisket | Sauce | | Place: | 39th | 45th | 44th | 11th | 52nd | | Score: | 155 | 149 | 153 | 166 | 136 | Riverfest 2005 Photo Gallery |
