Nashville, TN August 5-6 32nd place overall/50 teams (610) The Co-Bros headed north up I-65/I-24 to park the "Egg Carton" on the blistering asphalt grounds of Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, TN on Thursday night. Fortunately, we had the opportunity to get about 5-6 hours of sleep Thursday at the OLR hotel in preparation for the Big Show in Music City because we knew by awards on Saturday we would be sleep deprived. The Co-Bros completed the set-up Friday morning, prepped the meat and BGE smokers for the long night of cooking to come.
Friend and team sponsors Don Colyer and his wife joined us early Friday afternoon. The evening was eventful with the preparation of the famous TNR baked beans by Don and Kirk. The beans were smoked on the BGE, then artfully displayed in colorful bowls and garnished with fresh garden tomatoes. The baked beans scored a 154 and placed Co-Bros/TNR-Que in the Top 10 for the first time in the Anything Butt category. Also, the sauce entries were exciting because 3 versions of the popular TNR sauce were entered, and the Co-Bros version with a splash of TN Blackberry wine placed 14th overall and 1st in our mini contest. Also, our Co-Bros BBQ booth received a few repeat glances from the judges with our product/award display and a customed designed fine swine floral arrangement by Kim. After late night chats with Neighbors Brewin’ and Quein’ and Governors BBQ, the Co-Bros may have got 2-3 hours of interrupted sleep. As the Saturday morning grew older and we got closer to turn-in, the party continued to explode and tempers sparked in the sultry heat and humidity of Nashville. (OOPS…is it a party or a competition/sport…the 2 just don’t mix during turn-in time and it showed with the flinging of meat and utensils by a un-named Co-Bro). Even with all of the distractions the Co-Bros once again received a stage call for 9th place chicken (166) and also finished in the top 50% for their brisket entry; and after dodging summer thunderstorms all afternoon, enduring the sweltering heat, and calming their testy tempers, the Co-Bros were able to find peace of mind. Their 2 Top 10 finishes, another Big Green Egg sale, and continued sales of the famous Dizzy Pig rubs and TN River sauce helped sooth the angst of the weekend. The Bro’s will use the next 6 weeks to relax away from the heat, plan strategy for our pulled pork entry, and re-design our cook-site set-up to allow some privacy for the turn-in crunch time. Watch out for the Co-Bros…Riverfest 2005, our hometown show, here we come !!!
